summer sunset concert on the beach

... on sunday afternoon my very good friends and i decided we would attend one of many summer sunset concerts on the beach in hermosa.

this concert series is funded by the city and is open to the public free of charge. one of the perks is you can setup an entire picnic, with food, beverages and the like. this is where things got interesting. as we were lugging our 4 bags of groceries, beer, and wine down to the beach we were discussing how fun it was going to be and how prepared we were. well, upon arrival, we were the amateurs. some people had whole dining room sets, chairs, tables, even flowers on the table!!

the beach ended up being really full of people, more than i expected. the music was half way decent, the food and drinks were great, and it was all around another great time with my friends.

here are a few pictures from the evening:

2007 Mercedes Benz E63 AMG

holy crap... i like!!

2007 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

"With the introduction of the 2007 E63 AMG, the tuning division’s 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8 will replace the supercharged V-8 in the now-defunct E55. The new AMG motor has a dramatically different character from the torque monster it replaces. Although it generates 34 more horsepower if you wind it up to 6800 rpm, it has only 465 pound-feet of torque — that’s down 51 compared to the previous engine. More telling is that the E55 delivered 516 pound-feet from a low 2650 rpm, but the E63 doesn’t hit its torque peak until 5200 rpm. It’s destined to be a screamer."

No. 1 U.S. oil company earns $1,318 a second!!!

this is ridiculous!!!!!!

No. 1 U.S. oil company earns $1,318 a second - topping forecasts - but comes in just shy of a record.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Profits at Exxon Mobil surged 36 percent to a near record $10.4 billion in the second quarter as surging oil prices helped the world's largest publicly traded company soundly beat Wall Street forecasts.

The company's profit - which amounts to a cool $1,318 a second - is the second biggest ever reported by a U.S. company, behind only the $10.7 billion Exxon itself earned in the fourth quarter of 2005.

The earnings equaled $1.72 a share, topping the $1.64 a share analysts had forecast on average, according to First Call. Total revenue in the quarter was just a bit more than $99 billion.

Exxon (Charts) shares rose modestly in afternoon New York Stock Exchange trading.

The $1,318 a second would buy enough gasoline, even at the current $3 a gallon national average, to drive a Hummer H3 between Los Angeles and New York three times.

One analyst said Exxon's record fourth-quarter earnings in 2005 included a $400 million tax charge that analysts were not including as part of that quarter's profit.

"Apples to apples, this quarter is the highest by any organization ever," said Fadel Gheit, an energy analyst at Oppenheimer.

Irving, Texas-based Exxon Mobil caught considerable flak from the general public for its record fourth quarter, which came soon after gasoline prices hit record highs.

Compounding matters, the company gave its outgoing CEO Lee Raymond a retirement package worth about $350 million around the same time.

That combination of events led to a public outcry calling for restrictions on CEO pay and calls from lawmakers who wanted to institute a windfall profits tax on the oil industry or even break up some of the oil giants that merged in the 1990s.

But the industry says that oil prices fluctuate widely over time and that, in the long run, it's actually less profitable than a number of other industries.

Officials have also argued against a government-forced breakup, saying oil companies need to be big to compete in a global market against foreign state-run firms, some of which are larger than Exxon Mobil.

Surging oil prices helped Exxon in the second quarter, when crude prices jumped 31 percent.

Exxon said spending on exploration and production rose 8 percent in the quarter, to $4.9 billion, while overall output rose 6 percent.

Investors have been concerned that high oil prices would lead the company to boost spending even further.

But the desire to restrain spending may run counter to consumer's interests, as more oil on the market would help lower gas prices.

Gheit said the company sent $7.9 billion back to shareholders in the second quarter in the form of dividends and stock buybacks.

He said Exxon's expenditures on exploration and production were sufficient, as most of the world's oil reserves are by now widely known. Extracting those reserves, he said, is constrained more by politics than it is by lack of spending on exploration.

"They can't just go and push [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and say, 'let us in,'" he said. "They need access to resources, what can they do?"

Gheit thought the company was striking a good balance with how it is spending its cash.

When asked about investing in renewable energy technologies, an Exxon official said that, apart from ethanol, it's generally not part of the company's plan.

"There are very few that are economical without subsidies," said Henry Hubble, vice president for investor relations, on a conference call. "We don't think it makes sense to invest in it at this point."

The company's mammoth earnings, and its reluctance to get into the alternative energy market, drew fire from critics.

Shawnee Hoover, director of Exxpose Exxon, a coalition of groups including Greenpeace and the Sierra Club, said Exxon will continue to post record profits until consumers have other energy choices.

"Exxon wants to preserve [its] market by not doing anything about global warming," Hoover said on a conference call.

Industry experts say that it's becoming increasingly expensive for oil companies to get easily refinable crude oil out of the ground.

At the same time, high prices have led to surging demand for exploration and drilling equipment and workers, causing the price of such services to jump at least 15 percent a year over the last several years, industry executives and analysts say.

Then there's the geological fact that new, large, high-quality oil fields are simply getting harder to find.

Meanwhile, new production hasn't kept pace with surging demand - not only from the United States but from China, India and other rapidly growing economies - which has driven prices up nearly fourfold, from around $20 a barrel in early 2002 to a trading high of $78.40 earlier this month on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Tensions in the Middle East and other parts of the world and speculative buying by big investment funds have also helped fuel the run-up.

long solo cross country flight put off, again...

i was going to make my long solo cross country flight today, however, the limited visability due to haze in the LA area and south over OC kept me grounded. this is really the only flying i need to do to finish up my requirements.

here is what i have planned...

as you can see from this flight plan (generated by software i downloaded, which is super nifty, it even adjusts flying times and downloads faa weather, etc)... ill depart heading south east, pick up socal radar advisory (ATC), and head south-east over towards el toro. from el toro turn just about east over to french valley, this is the same flight i did on 21 July 2006.

perhaps tomorrow will provide better weather and visability. stay tuned!

just got to thinking...

"When you're young, your whole life is about the pursuit of fun. Then, you grow up and learn to be cautious. You could break a bone or a heart. You look before you leap and sometimes you don't leap at all because there's not always someone there to catch you. And in life, there's no safety net. When did it stop being fun and start being scary?"

stupid myspace

my profile contents got deleted when myspace had some kind of failure over the weekend, seems that everyone elses which was deleted is now restored... but not mine... :(

just a thought...

"When I think about how I've grown in the few years from my early 20s to my mid-20s, one thing come to mind immediately. Price. Simply put, we pay for everything we want in one way or another. Time with our families, a meaningful relationship, money, a career track - these are all things I've watched the people around me trade as we make pressing decisions that affect our futures. And still, everything is about the future. That mind set hasn't changed. Every now and then I make serious mental efforts to make a life that I can enjoy currently instead of one that is based on a fantastic future life. The price of thinking only about the future is extreme because it costs you the present."

Evening Flight to French Valley (F70) / Lake Elsinor...

... another night flight on the books!!

(link to the remaining pictures is at the bottom of this post)

so many months ago i told steve i would take him on a flight when he moved here, and since he has been here for a few days we decided this evening would be the time... originally i had planned on just doing a sunset flight (like i did with my cousin last time he was in town) down the coast of LA, starting downtown heading west out over malibu and then heading south over LAX and down to newport and back. however, after arriving at the airport and preflighting the plane we decided (with a little proding from my flight instructor) to fly east over lake elsinor and land a little uncontrolled airport in french valley...

we took off from hawthorne about 1 hour before sunset, the flight would take us around 35 minutes to go the 70 or so nautical miles to french valley. departing hawthorne we flew south and picked up radar service shortly thereafter, which pointed us south-east towards the mountains. steve was in the back taking some photos.

this would be steves first flight in a single engine private plane. he seemed a little quiet but everytime i would glance over my shoulder he was just grinning and taking it all in. what a great evening for flight, next to no wind, clear skies, and not a lot of air traffic!

arriving in french valley i made a very impressive (to myself, hehe) landing... after an hours worth of tuna melts and chat about upcoming flight, relationships, life in general, we decided to head back. we left french valley and again picked up radar service, while en route back off to the north we could see the fireworks from disney, which was very cool from 4500 ft!

another smooth landing in hawthorne and 1.9 hours of flight time added to my log book. what a great evening!!!

a whole slew of pictures can be seen: here
